Travis moves HOME

Exactly 6 months after his motorcycle accident, I have this to post...

The first 2 months of the New Year were certainly better than the last 2 months of 2013. We gained some normalcy and routine. Travis was still living in Terry's office. In the beginning of January, Travis saw one of the certified brain injury specialist for a consultation at Transitional Learning Center in Lubbock. Praise the Lord...evaluation showed him to be cognitively normal. It still amazes me how merciful God is to restore Travis to a level where he can function and thrive on his own.

It was after that Travis was hired at Children's Hope, a foster care facility. Travis was hired as a counselor on their campus that housed the "difficult children" ranging in ages 5 up to 18 years. It was a challenging job, emotionally. Dealing with kiddos that have no stability; no one who is constant in their life; no one who tells them they love them; no one who is there for them, personally. Travis would come home daily and have at least one heart-breaking "happening" at work to share. He worked the 6am-2pm shift but was frequently not off until 3 o'clock or later.

During this time, Travis was also released by all of his physicians. Bones had healed. Brain had healed. Eye still drifted, but was completely restored over time. He followed up with a physical therapist to start a weight lifting regime. When his schedule allowed, he would go to Jack's high school and work out with Jack after school. During the month of January, Travis also updated his CDL physical. Travis got his class A CDL back in 2010 and it was time to re-certify him physically. All was well with that too!

It was in February that we started talking about him moving into his own place sometime in March. We started looking...well, I started looking...at apartments in Lubbock. All along, Travis said he wanted to move back to Amarillo. The momma that I am really hoped he would stay in Lubbock for a year or so...or at least through the summer. About mid-February, Travis received a phone call from a friend in Amarillo that he has known since high school; a friend he waited tables with prior to the wreck. Tyler said he wanted to give his boss Travis' name & number to contact for a driving job.

Travis accepted a position with 84 Lumber in Amarillo as a delivery driver and started on March 3rd. Exactly 5 months after his horrible motorcycle accident, I helped Travis move into his own apartment, completely on his own. Travis is a different person in some ways and in other ways just the same, happy young man. He definitely talks more! He definitely realizes the consequences of decisions...good and bad. He certainly appreciates family & time spent more than before. It has been a journey that is not over just yet...and he realizes that God has real purpose for his life and looks forward to discovering exactly what that is!
